Morgan Spurlock, the filmmaker who gained fame with his Oscar-nominated 2004 film "Super Size Me," died Monday at the age of 53. The cause of death was not immediately known, but Spurlock had been battling liver and kidney problems in recent years. Spurlock's death was announced by his wife, Alexandra Jamieson, in a statement released on Tuesday. "I am deeply saddened to share that my beloved husband, Morgan Spurlock, passed away yesterday," she wrote. "He was a brilliant filmmaker, a loving father, and a dear friend. He will be deeply missed."

Spurlock was born on November 7, 1970, in Parkersburg, West Virginia. He studied film at New York University and made his feature film debut with "Super Size Me," which chronicled his month-long experiment eating nothing but McDonald's food. The film was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to raise awareness about the health risks of fast food.

After "Super Size Me," Spurlock went on to direct a number of other documentaries, including "Where in the World is Osama bin Laden?" (2008), "Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope" (2011), and "Rats" (2016). He also hosted the CNN series "Morgan Spurlock Inside Man" from 2011 to 2014.
